I’ve been on holiday in Cyprus this week, taking a week off for some R&R after another hectic four months.
Holidays are holidays for me: that means no exercise plans AND I’ve eaten a bit more of the things we generally shouldn’t.
So the bread and the carbs came back.
Yep, the cheap and dirty refined stuff that contributes to us putting on a few pounds.
So yep… I’m feeling the BLOAT again this week.
Back to normal next week though…
Anyway…
These foods have reminded me about something I read last month – Saturday November 14th marks World Diabetes Day.
Luckily the odd week of bad habits are easily undone but those who have consistently bad lifestyles can be doing themselves serious damage.
I’m not just talking about a few pounds around the waistline…
This year the International Diabetes Federation is promoting healthy living and starting each day right by having a healthy breakfast.
This is a theme to combat the current worldwide epidemic: Halt the Diabetes Epidemic
But I need your help…
I was wondering if you’d help me spread this awareness?
We probably all need to improve our nutrition.
Even I slack sometimes!
The campaign is being backed by all major health organisations to draw attention to the health issues attributed to Diabetes and to keep the disease firmly in the public spotlight.
To be honest, I think we should all be doing more to make sure we make the time and effort to make breakfast the most important meal of the day again.
In my experience, most people eat the wrong types of food and some don’t even have anything at all for breakfast.
It’s all convenience food for most.
Cereal is cheap!
The trouble is most cereals are made from refined carbohydrates and are very high in sugar. These options typically raise blood sugar levels rapidly and leave you hungry again way before lunch.
And to be blunt, they are partly the reason people are fat these days.
And it’s not just what we eat that we should be more aware of.
What do you drink with your breakfast?
This should be thought about carefully too.
Not many will know this, but fruit juice is not actually that good for you!
You should consider cutting fruit juice out or having a smaller glass of it. Just a 150ml glass of unsweetened orange juice contains around 15g of carbohydrate and 13g of sugar!
A healthy breakfast should be a combination of a protein source, some healthy fats. Ideally with the inclusion of some greens and fibre.
Some great options are:
- Eggs
- Salmon
- Avocado
- Nuts
- Greek Yoghurt
You can find out how to make some healthy and tasty options in my Feed Me Fit Cookbook.
You could be one of those who avoids breakfast.
Maybe you don’t think you have time?
To be honest – I get it!
If you are one of those than why not try a smoothie option?
I have those in my book too. And these cover all of the points I recommend above.
It’s been proven with my members of the Inner Circle; making breakfast a major focus dictates what kind of day you have.
Do you want to have a good day at work?
