If weight loss is your goal then STOP focusing on weight loss and you’ll have more weight loss…
What? Well, let me explain…
You see, people very often have the WRONG focus!
People don’t really want weight loss. They’re often after something else.
Let me tell you about the story of ‘The Drill’
Have you heard of that old saying that no one buys a drill for the actual drill, right?
We’re told to remember that they buy it for the hole.
But that’s not true.
No-one wants a hole. I mean, what good is a hole or even a hundred holes?
We don’t want the hole.
We want what we can do with the hole… like put up a shelf or something..!
But do we really want a shelf?
No, of course not!
We want what we can put on the shelf… like photos of loved ones or ornaments that we treasure or books that we want to keep because they are meaningful and valuable to us.
But let’s be honest, no-one really wants the pictures, ornaments or books themselves.
That’s all just stuff.
We end up with drills and holes and shelves and photographs and ornaments and pictures and books and… Yeah… Stuff!!
But if we don’t want it all for its own sake then why do we want it?
We want it because of how it makes us feel.
That photograph that makes me feel happy and connected when I see the smile on a loved one’s face, the ornament that reminds me to feel what I felt when I was on that holiday when I bought it, the book that helps me feel certain and confident that I’m heading in the right direction in my job, my career, my relationship or my life.
The truth is, EVERY goal is the search for a feeling
People don’t want weight-loss, they want weight-loss because it makes them feel…..
People don’t run because they can cross a finish line, they want to cross a finish line because it makes them feel….
The truth is, most people don’t WANT a Personal Trainer/Coach for the exercise, they want the feeling that they hope the training with a PT/Coach will give them. They hope it will help them to feel again or feel more of or, perhaps, feel for the first time.
That feeling could be to get into that dress you have always wanted or used to be able to fit into.
Or for the guys to fit into those new T-Shirts that show off their muscles a little bit more and get a smaller waist jean size.
So people should STOP focusing on the weight-loss and ask themselves what is it they REALLY want?
Why do you train and exercise, what is it that you want to REALLY achieve and how does it make you feel?
