I had that nervous, sick feeling this week…

Whether you work with me, met me once, or you just enjoy reading my weekly emails and blogs, you’ll know that I enjoy exercise.

I’ve been in this business now for a good few years and I’ve been exercising for many more.

Despite that, the thoughts I had last week are probably similar to the ones that you’re having right now.

Over the years I’ve tried various different forms or exercise, which is why I can help a wide range of people improve their health.

Yes, I will recommend some kind of resistance based training if you’re trying to improve your body composition and lose weight… but it isn’t always about that.

Some people love other activities like running and cycling.

This is part of the reason why I get involved in these activities myself so I can help those who want to improve in these areas.

I love a good challenge and I know how to get on with my own training.

I even take advice from others if it’s sensible.

I’m a listener too, and I’ll blend these ideas with those of my own if I know they work.

I haven’t always been where I am now though…

I used to be a little lazy.

I had a bit of a beer gut and I ate junk!

^^^ I’ll still have the odd burger and beer though 😉

This was a good few years ago now and I knew being overweight, stressed and unhappy with myself was not what I wanted.

I knew exercise and some nutritional advice would be good for me.

But…

… I was SCARED of making that first step.

I had THAT deja vu moment last week

I was thrown right back to that first day in the gym.

Yes, even though I’m a personal trainer I had a scary moment about exercise.

I’ve recently linked up with a PE teacher who runs a local circuit class in Warwick.

This is mainly to start adding a form of group exercise as part of one of my 12 Week Plan programs.

I can’t run these myself as I am busy with my 1-2-1 and coaching clients but I’m big on preaching what I practice so I had to experience this class myself, right?!

I’ll be dead honest and upfront with you right now…

I started getting that butterfly moment a few hours before the class!

It reminded me of that time I booked my FIRST EVER personal training session with my old instructor, Rich.

You may think that’s daft.

You’d have thought I’d just lap it up, right? It was just an exercise class after all.

The thing is…  I’m normally the one who is telling others what to do but my brain kept telling me this was going to be different.

I was out of my COMFORT ZONE!

This time I was going to be told what to do and I had no idea who might be judging me.

Those thoughts kept flooding back from all those years ago:

  • I don’t want to get embarrassed!
  • What will people think about me?
  • What will they be whispering?

Yes, this probably surprises you but these are the things that went through my head.

As it turned out I just got stuck in.

If you think anyone is pointing the finger at you then you’re wrong

In a gym everyone is probably thinking the same… with their heads down getting on with their own exercises.

After a few minutes I realised what a plonker I’d been.

The friendly mixed atmosphere of the group made me feel welcome.

It was pretty awesome actually.

Some of the guys must have been in their 60’s and yet they really got stuck into it.

It was great. I’m a BIG believer that age is not a barrier to exercise and anyone can do it if they want to.

Those thoughts of not being good enough were soon banished!

Do these sort of thoughts go through your head too?

You see: I get it – I’m right there with you…

I’ve been there before and that’s why I totally understand. I really do have compassion for those who take that decisive first step.

That first step to change.

It is SCARY but with the right SUPPORT and GUIDANCE then you can kick FEAR and SELF-DOUBT into touch.

That Warwick class is now part of my program for my members.

My 12 Week Plan now has an option for anyone with any budget…
