I went to see a fight the other night and then a hockey game broke out.
Yup – 12 men walking on water you might say…
…But luckily the pitch was frozen.
If you haven’t worked out what I’m on about yet, Sam took me to my first EVER hockey game at the SkyDome in Coventry this week.
If you’re not local then let me explain: The Mighty (and local) Coventry Blaze are the good guys and Nottingham were the opposition.
So being a beginner (YES – we all start somewhere) to me it looked like a game of 2 goalkeepers and 10 men trying to smash a puck around the icy pitch!!
My observations led me to believe that a puck is a hard rubber disc thingy that players strike when they can’t hit each other!
I’m probably making ice hockey players out to be thugs, right?
Well to be fair to them, if you take off the pads and protection then they’re pretty skilful and very elegant skaters too.
(It was a bit like Celebrity On Ice with Steroids)
I watched them warm up as each player took it in turns to belt the puck into an empty net.
I couldn’t help feel slightly concerned that the players were missing this empty net more times than they scored.
This reminded me of that great sporting quote…
‘You’ll miss 100% of the shots that you don’t take‘
Of course if you’re an Ice Hockey fan you’ll know that that’s Wayne Gretzky’s most famous quote and he was one of the top scoring players in history.
If you want something then you’ve gotta give it a go.
Anyway, you probably wanna know the score, right?
Well it was 1-1 after the first interval and then Coventry came out BLAZING and went into a 4-1 lead!!
Nottingham hit back though and got it to 4-3 with just two minutes to go
The Blaze had a man ‘sin binned’ and Nottingham swapped their goalie for an outfield player.
It was now six against four and all Coventry could do was turn themselves into a human wall.
This was gonna be a STRUGGLE.
All Coventry could do was use TEAMWORK of the highest degree and SUPPORT each other.
The seconds were ticking and it was SQUEAKY BUM TIME for me!!
I was on the edge of my seat.
(Man this was REALLY tense stuff)
Two minutes felt like 10!!
But the whistle FINALLY blew and Coventry Blaze had won!
This is the bit where you’ll usually hear me tell you how this kind of TEAMWORK and guidance is why my inner circle helps people get EXCITING results at PSPT.
